A pair of Toronto FC players were among those named to the U.S. Olympic men’s soccer team on Thursday.
Defender Marvell Wynne and midfielder Maurice Edu — the reigning Major League Soccer rookie of the year — made the cut for the 18-man squad that will participate in next month’s Beijing Games.
Veteran forward Brian McBride — a former English Premier League player whose MLS rights are held by Toronto — was also named to the U.S. team by head coach Peter Nowak.
McBride, goalkeeper Brad Guzan and defender Michael Parkhurst are the three overage players allowed in the under-23 tournament.
Toronto FC’s two representatives on the U.S. team match the most by any club. The MLS’s Houston Dynamo and Real Salt Lake also placed a pair of players on the American team, which finished second at the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament in March.
