Though only two games into its 2008 season, the Rhea County High School soccer team is already halfway to matching its 2007 win total.
The Golden Eagles, who went 2-10-2 last season, defeated Tellico Plains High School 4-0 in Tuesday nights opener.
We emptied the bench the last 15 minutes, Rhea County Head Coach Scott Heath said of the shutout victory. Were faster than we were last year. The teams binding together real close. Theyre easy to coach and flexible with their positions.
The Eagles improvement was evident in game two of the season as well, when they held even with the reigning Region 3-AAA Champions the Soddy Daisy Trojans for more than a half. Though the Trojans triumphed after two goals late in the game, Heath was impressed with his teams ability to hang with an area superpower.

ST Marys College, Galway, captured the Connacht schools soccer title in Castlebar on Monday last. The windswept conditions didnt deter the players from netting five splendid goals and showcasing some outstanding individual performances.
The first goal of the game arrived with only five minutes of the game played after Gerard Cheevers delivered a well-struck St Marys corner into the six yard box, which was met by an excellent header from Captain, Mike Elwood.
The Galway side grew in confidence after taking the early lead and added a second as soon as the 12th minute. The ball was played down the left to Eric Holland who in turn played an excellent through ball into Jonathan Duane who got a head on to the leather and guided it into the far corner.
In rampant mode, St Marys looked like scoring their third when some excellent support play by Mike Elwood helped release David OCarroll, but his powerful shot flew just wide.

Police arrested a 17-year-old Manalapan boy Tuesday for causing $24,800 in damage to a soccer field last year. Police found the teenager through On-Star records.
About 11:30 p.m. Nov. 21, the teen allegedly spun his 2007 GMC Denali, making “donuts” in St. Joseph’s Episcopal School in the 3300 block of South Seacrest Boulevard.
The South Florida Sun-Sentinel is not releasing the teen’s name because his is a minor.
During the time the teen was spinning out, On-Star received a “collision notification.” The documents were turned over to police after a subpoena.
Police charged the teen with reckless driving and criminal mischief.
